Hello all! Today I’m going to introduce you to the wonderful world of saving money through Shareholder Perks – it’s a great way to combine the world of moneysaving and investing!

As ever – our normal note that we take care with what we write on this site but it is not official “financial advice” and whatever investments and savings you enter need to be right for your circumstances. We always suggest doing your own further research. If you’re in doubt about anything, it’s worth consulting a regulated and reputable financial advisor who can provide tailored advice built for you.

Unbiased is a resource that can help you match with an advisor who matches your needs.

Important: With regard to this article, all information is written solely with regard to detailing the shareholder perks and how you can qualify for them. This means we haven’t assessed the underlying shares as investment opportunities. and you should be aware that once purchased the value of your underlying investment could fluctuate.

What are Shareholder Perks?

Shareholder Perks are usually provided in the form of discount vouchers given by the company you own shares is as a thank you for being a shareholder.

The company themselves will usually issue these once a year to registered shareholders. The reason for this is largely administrative – the share registar will have to match you and the ownership of your shares to prove you’re entitled to the discounts.

It’s not an area where technology has particularly kept up, and so tends to be quite manual both for your broker and the companies to administrate.

How many Shares do I need to hold to qualify for Shareholder Perks?

The individual company will set the requirement on how many shares you’ll need to hold to qualify for Shareholder Perks. In many cases, it can be a low as a single share!

Where the amount of shares you need to qualify for shareholder perks is known, we’ve published these in our list of UK companies below.

Can I get Shareholder Perks if I own a company as part of an ETF or Index Fund?

No, you’ll generally need to have a single name shareholding to qualify for any Shareholder Perks.

Can I get Shareholder Perks regardless of which Broker I use?

Not always.

Given claiming a shareholder perk is administratively heavy on behalf of the brokerage, some of the discount brokers don’t allow you to claim perks.

It’s worth contacting your broker or researching shareholder perks on their websites to check their policy, but we’ve summarised some positions of better known UK Brokers:

Hargreaves Lansdown – Allows shareholder perks to be claimed, but you’ll need to e-mail or call them.

FreeTrade – Presently do not allow shareholder perks to be claimed.

AJ Bell – Presently do not allow shareholder perks to be claimed.

Fidelity – Provide a page to allow you to self-claim shareholder perks

Trading 212 – Presently do not allow shareholder perks to be claimed.
